“Big Enough for Words”: An Ekphrastic Excavation of Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara Library’s Edson Smith photography collection has been put to use by 31 poets who have contributed to an anthology just published by Gunpowder Press. Poets whose work I am familiar with in this anthology include Christopher Buckley, M.L. Brown, Laure-Anne Bosselaar, Marsha de la O, Phil Taggard, and Diana Raab, Chryss Yost. Several of the contributors are either current or former Poet Laureates of Santa Barbara, including the following:

Emma Trelles is the current Santa Barbara Poet Laureate and author of Tropicalia, winner of the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize. She teaches at Santa Barbara City College and curates the Mission Poetry Series.

Laure-Anne Bosselaar is the author of four poetry books, the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and edited five anthologies. She won the James Dickey Prize for Poetry in 2020. Her new book, These Many Rooms, came out from Four Way Books. She served as Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate (2019-2021).

Chryss Yost, Ph.D., is a Santa Barbara Poet Laureate (2013-15) and co-editor of Gunpowder Press. Her poems have been widely published in anthologies and journals, most recently in SALT

Perie Longo, Santa Barbara Poet Laureate (2007-09), has published four books of poetry.
